Cougars, at 2 meters long and weighing 75 kilograms, are killing machines. With a large body, and proportionally large front and hind legs, they can pounce and slaughter with ease. Considered “ghosts of the forest” by some, Cougars are solitary predators that ambush prey, which is usually any mammal smaller than they are, from above in the densely wooded forests of the Yukon. Once their larger prey has been taken down, cougars will drag and carry them into a tree, to protect it from competitors and scavengers. Having only recently moved north to the Yukon by following the deer population, the cougar is endangered already! Cougars have no set mating season and breed as they please, but are slaughtered faster than they can reproduce. But, if you’d like to catch a glimpse of the majestic beast, the southern bits of the Yukon near the BC border or Brae burn Elk herd are where you should head. R.I.P you.
The largest breed of falcon in the world, the Gyrfalcon is a powerful and fast predator that feeds on other birds with incredible skills. At an average length of 18.9–25.2 inches, the Gyrfalcon is quite the sizable bird, and it can weigh 28.4 - 74.1. An odd trait of the Gyrfalcon would be it’s storing of prey during breeding season, usually within 100 meters of it’s nest. Actually, the Gyrfalcon doesn't build it's own nest, It uses the nests of other birds. The predator's diet consists of other birds, specifically the Ptarmigan, or mammals like hares and voles.
The trumpeter swan, whose feathers are known for being used as quills, arrows, and hat decorations, are now considered a threatened species. With a wingspan of up to eight feet and weighing 21-30 pounds, the Trumpeter swan is the largest waterfowl species in North America. They are extremely possessive and territorial, especially during mating season. The known predators of this beautiful creature are the human race, bears, wolves, and bobcats among other things. The maximum that a trumpeter swan will live is around twenty four years in the wild, probably the average lifespan of the average cocaine addict. Their mating habits are monogamous, meaning they have but one partner in a lifetime, thus making their love lives very boring (by silly human standards).
